County Commission Approved Resolutions During Business Meeting Tuesday

Members of the Lawrence County Commission who met in regular session Tuesday approved a number of items of business.

Commissioners voted in favor of a resolution to change the speed limit on Pattershack Road to 35 miles per hour. The action was taken at the urging of residents who requested the change "for the safety of children living" along the roadway.

Commissioners approved a resolution allowing them to apply for a Litter and Trash Collecting Grant for fiscal year 2014-2015 through the Department of Transportation. The application is for an unspecified amount.

After it was brought before the commission for the second time, members voted to approve a resolution to declare property in the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department as surplus property.

The property includes some currently non-operable vehicles. The commission will determine what will be done with the property at a later date.

Commissioners approved a resolution, "Declaring the intent of Lawrence County, Tennessee to reimburse itself in an approximate amount of $480,000 for certain expenditures relating to school construction projects with the proceeds of bonds, notes, or other debt obligations issued by, or on behalf of, Lawrence County, Tennessee."

Commissioners also approved a resolution authorizing the issuance of General Obligation School Refunding Bonds, "In the aggregate principal amount of not to exceed $3,270,000."

Commissioners indicated that the action is to refinance bonds that were issued in 2000. They said that the action will save the county approximately $175,000.

Also approved was the Doubles and Errors Report for 2012 taxes, along with a resolution to, "Write off certain uncollectible solid waste accounts from the books and records of Accounts and Budgets of Lawrence County, Tennessee."

One resolution was removed from the agenda before any business was conducted. It was, "To approve consent, release and waiver for closure of a portion of Gum Springs Road." Several residents had turned out to oppose the action.

In addition to these business items, members of the commission voted to approve resolutions honoring outgoing Loretto City officials Fred Simbeck and Willie Flippo.

Simbeck served as a Loretto police officer for twelve years, then as Mayor from 2010-2014. Flippo, who is a long-time Loretto businessman, served as Alderman from 2002-2014. Both men were recognized, "For their years of service to Loretto and Lawrence County."

Commissioners Chris Jackson, Wayne Yocum, and Larry Glass issued a joint statement saying, "We want to sincerely thank Mr. Simbeck and Mr. Flippo for their service to Loretto and our county. There is no higher calling than that of public service and these two guys exemplify what it means to be a public official. We are all better off for their service to our community."
