A home and all of the contents were destroyed when a fire ignited at a Summertown home Friday.

Units with the Summertown and Henryville Fire Departments answered the 11:00 p.m. call to the home, situated at 131 Wateroak Street.

According to reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies were dispatched to the scene to investigate after firefighters noticed a gas can lying in the front yard.

When the resident arrived he told deputies that he and his family had left around 7:00 p.m. and everything appeared to be fine. He said that the gas can was out because he had cut the lawn earlier.

Deputies noted that it was apparent that the grass was freshly cut.

Officials report that the fire appeared to have ignited near the back door. Damages and loss were estimated to total $84,000.
