Detectives Investigate Craig’s List Fraud

Detectives with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department initiated an investigation during the weekend after a resident reported she feared she had been the victim of fraud via a Craig’s List transaction.

The resident of Ethridge reported the matter to sheriff’s deputies on Sunday. She indicated she had made arrangements to obtain a “free piano” that had been listed on the site. Under the arrangement, “all she needed to do was pay for the shipping transfer” that would allow the piano to be rerouted from a Nashville address, to her home on Jennifer Court.

The victim told deputies she forwarded $244 via Western Union to “Carolyn Comerford.” On Sunday, she said she received an email from the truck driver, indicating he had been “pulled over in Kansas City, Missouri and would need $200 more to get insurance to be able to move the truck.”

The victim said she requested the driver send her paperwork verifying his claim. She said she subsequently received an email that listed the name of a police officer, but that she had no way to confirm the validity of the matter.

The victim was advised to contact Western Union as a first step, in an effort to determine what might be done about the situation. Investigation is on-going at this time.
