Smith Is Featured Speaker For Lawrenceburg Memorial Day Ceremony

Major (R) John Thomas Smith will be the featured speaker at the Lawrenceburg Memorial Day Ceremony, to be held Monday, May 31, inside the auditorium at the Lawrenceburg City Administration Building.

A 1982 graduate of Lawrence County High School and 1986 graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, Smith served with distinction for more than 20 years in a variety of assignments in the Army National Guard, Active Army, and the Army Reserve, and participated in Operation Continue Hope in Mogadishu, Somalia. He continues to serve the U.S. Army as a Department of Army Civilian at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. There, Smith serves as Logistics Division Chief for the Armed Scout Helicopter Project Office, Program Executive Office Aviation.

During his years of service Smith received many awards and decorations including:  the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army achievement Medal, the United Nations Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Senior Aviator Badge, the Parachutist and Air Assault Badges, the Valorous Unit Award and the Combat Patch and Stripe for service in Somalia.

Smith is the son of Lawrenceburg residents James Howard and Linda Smith. He is married to the former Angela Francis Valerio. They have two daughters, Ashlan age 19, Kaitlan age 16, and one son, Chris age 13.

The 2010 City of Lawrenceburg Memorial Day Ceremony will get underway at 6:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
