Local Man Asked To Repay Double Payment On Lottery Win

Local law enforcement officials have asked that a local man repay one of two payoffs he erroneously received on a single Tennessee Lottery ticket.

Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department show that a complaint regarding the matter was initially filed on May 14 by officials with Buffalo Road Market. Owners reported that a customer had purchased a scratch-off lottery ticket that day on which he won a $500 prize. The clerk reportedly paid the man his winnings, but failed to scan the ticket into the system so that the store could be reimbursed by the lottery commission.

When the man asked whether he could keep the ticket, the clerk handed it over and he left the premises. The clerk did not have the customer’s name, etc., therefore they were unable to contact him.

The market owner told deputies that he later received a call, indicating that the man had received payment on the same ticket at Eastside Market in Waynesboro. The caller said he had heard the man boasting about obtaining the double payment. He said was able to obtain a description of the man’s car as well as his license plate number.

With this information in hand, deputies were able to identify the man as a resident of the Leoma area. Reports indicate they made their way to the home where they spoke with the man’s wife. They informed the wife that store officials were not interested in filing criminal charges against her husband so long as he repaid the ill-gotten $500.

Since the man was not home at the time of their visit, the reporting deputy indicates he left his cell phone number and requested that he contact him. At the time reports were filed, the deputy reported he had not heard from the man.
