Local National Guardsmen Return

More local National Guardsmen are slated to return home this week, after having served for the past year in Iraq.

National Guard Spokesperson Nate Crawford reported this week that members of the 1/181st Field Artillery Regiment of the Tennessee Army National Guard were slated to be flown into Air National Guard Readiness Center in Gulfport, Mississippi, on Wednesday and Thursday. Once they arrived, members of the unit were to be shuttled to Camp Shelby, Mississippi, for a brief time. “They will remain at Camp Shelby for a brief, unspecified period before traveling to Smyrna, Tenn., to undergo Reverse Soldier Readiness Processing,” Crawford indicated in a news release issued late Tuesday.

The 1/181st, headquartered in Chattanooga, includes soldiers from Chattanooga, Dayton, Athens, Fayetteville, Pulaski and Lawrenceburg. The unit left for training last June before being deployed in late August to work at Camp Bucca, a prisoner-of-war camp in southern Iraq.
