Man is found to be illegally armed while inside public library

Lawrenceburg Now

After receiving a phone call from a worried spouse, law enforcement officers confronted a man at the Lawrence County Public Library Friday, and seized his gun.

Dispatchers received a call from a woman in Pulaski who said that she was concerned about her husband, Perry Dale Andrews, age 63. She told them that he hadn’t been taking his medication as prescribed and was acting strange.

She said that he had left their home after which she realized that their .22 caliber pistol was missing. She told dispatchers that he was likely on his way to the library, which is located at 519 East Gaines Street in Lawrenceburg.

Lawrenceburg Police officers spoke with Andrews inside the library and he admitted that he had the gun in his front pocket. He accompanied the officers outside and handed it over to them.

They asked why he was armed and he told them that he was afraid that a child would pick up the gun and get hurt, so he put it in his pocket. He said that by the time he left his house he had forgotten about the gun.

Officers questioned Andrews about whether there were small children inside his home who might have picked up the pistol. They report that he “replied no then changed the subject.”

Officers did seize the pistol. They also wrote out a citation, charging Andrews with unlawful carrying of a firearm. The citation requires him to appear in General Sessions Court on June 1.
