Driver Cited For Illegal Possession Of Firearm

A traffic stop initiated in the wake of complaints from other drivers Monday resulted in a Lawrenceburg man being cited for illegal possession of a firearm.

According to reports, a Lawrenceburg Police Officer was dispatched around 11:00 a.m. to check for the driver of a camouflage, 1984 Toyota truck. Other motorists had reported the driver had crossed the center line several times while traveling in the area of West Gaines Street.

The officer reports he was able to quickly spot the truck. He said that he followed the truck for approximately four blocks when the driver negotiated a left turn into an alley.

While making the turn, the officer reports, the driver again crossed into the lane of oncoming traffic, causing one driver to brake rapidly in order to avoid a collision. At this point, the officer indicates he activated his lights and sirens, signaling to the driver to stop.

According to the officer, he noticed a long gun case lying inside the truck while speaking with driver Larry Bronson Ayers, 34, of 4105 Waynesboro Highway. He said he questioned Ayers about whether there were any firearms inside the truck. Ayers reportedly denied having a weapon inside the truck or on his person.

The officer reported that, for his safety, he asked that he be allowed to look inside the gun case to ensure there were no weapons.

While he was looking inside the truck, he reports he saw a handgun that had been placed between the driver’s seat and console. The .22 caliber Arminius revolver was loaded with seven rounds.

Because Ayers possessed no carry permit for the weapon, he was issued a citation charging him with illegal possession/carrying of a weapon.

He will be required to answer the charge in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on June 2, 2011.
