Wrecked, Abandoned Vehicle Bore Stolen Plate

Law enforcement officials reported Friday that a vehicle that had been wrecked and abandoned on a Lawrenceburg roadway bore a stolen license plate.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to an area on East Beasley Road, approximately one mile from Motivation Drive, around 8:00 a.m. to meet with a tow truck driver.

The driver told deputies he had been contacted to tow the 1987 Toyota truck to his shop on Shotwell Road. Once he arrived at the scene and saw the damages, he said he would not move the vehicle until an officer had an opportunity to investigate. He then summoned a deputy to the scene.

The reporting deputy indicates that he first ran a check on the license plate number. The check revealed the plate had been reported as stolen from the Tennessee Southern Railroad on May 6, 2010.

A check on the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the truck gave deputies the name of the registered owner, however reports show it was not the same person who had called for a tow truck. Further, the registered owner, reports show, had not reported the truck to be missing.

Deputies report that the vehicle had sustained fairly extensive damages in the crash. The steering column was broken and there was damage to the front end.

As a result of the investigation the vehicle was towed to the department’s Impound Lot on Windsor Drive, the reporting deputy notes, “where the lawful owner could pick it up along with citations for possession of stolen property, violation of the registration law, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident.”
