TBI Releases Hate Crime-LEOKA Report For 2009

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation today released two separate, annual reports that compile statistical data on hate crime and law enforcement officers injured in the line of duty for 2009. TBI’s Crime Statistics Unit based “Hate Crime 2009” and “Tennessee: Law Enforcement Officers Killed or Assaulted (LEOKA) 2009” on required monthly reporting of local law enforcement agencies crime statistics throughout the state.

In 2009, the number of LEOKA incidents as well as Hate Bias Offenses decreased. There were 2,037 LEOKA incidents reported in 2009 compared with 2,152 in 2008, a 5% decrease.

Bias motivated offenses were also down 14% to 359 offenses reported in 2009. However, the category of “Unknown Bias” increased 32% during the same time period.
Hate Crime 2009 Highlights

The 359 Hate Bias Offenses reported in 2009 represents a 0.06% total of all crimes reported in “Crime in Tennessee 2009.”

Racial Bias represented more than 27% of all hate crimes.
LEOKA 2009 Highlights

No officers were reported as feloniously killed in the line of duty for the year.

Most frequently, officers were injured when “responding to a disturbance” at nearly 32% and ”attempting other arrest” at 19%.

Personal Weapons (hands, fist, feet) were used to assault an officer close to 69% of the time.

No agencies reported incidents involving weapon types of shotgun- automatic, other firearm, other firearm- automatic or explosives.
