Lawrenceburg Man Arrested After Striking Umpire

A Lawrenceburg softball coach was arrested during a girl’s softball game in neighboring Maury County Saturday after he allegedly struck an umpire during an argument over a play.

The assault incident occurred Saturday night during a ten-year-old-and-under Columbia Fast Pitch Girls’ Softball League game. Columbia Police Department reports show that Coach Johnathan Allan Rose, 34, of Lawrenceburg, was the coach involved in the altercation with Umpire David Ray Kelley.

Rose told officers that he and Kelley had become engaged in an argument over a call in the second inning when Kelley “called him a liar.” He told officers that at that point “he lost it,” moved down the first base line, and struck Kelley with his fist in the left temple.

Kelley told officers that he did not remember many details about the altercation, but that he had not believed it to be serious in nature.

Witnesses who gave statements regarding the scuffle reported to officers that Kelley had been turning away when Rose punched him.

Kelley refused medical transport from the scene.

Rose was placed under arrest on one count of aggravated assault. He was later released from custody under a bond of $5,000.00.
