Shoplifter Is Stopped With Meth Components In Car

Authorities generated several police reports on Wednesday on a single man who allegedly shoplifted shoes, fled, stole money and medications, and was ultimately apprehended during a traffic stop while in possession of stolen property and components used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

According to reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department Cory Holt McCafferty, age 27, was apprehended late Wednesday in the vicinity of Second Avenue.

McCafferty had allegedly fled from Shoe Show on North Locust Avenue earlier in the day after exchanging his shoes for a pair of Nikes worth $50. A be on the lookout alert (BOLO) was issued, warning officers to be on the alert for both McCafferty and the vehicle in which he was traveling.

Around 8:30 p.m. a resident of Third Street summoned officers to his residence to report that McCafferty had stolen items from his home. He said he had asked him to purchase cell phones from him.

He told officers McCafferty had been sitting on the floor beside his pants that held his wallet. He said that McCafferty asked to use his bathroom and when he walked away he noticed his wallet had been removed from the pants pocket and shoved beneath his bed.

He found that $292 had been stolen. He told officers that he walked toward the bathroom to confront McCafferty, but that he realized he had left the residence. He said that he looked in the bathroom and found that all of his medications had been stolen. He later discovered that several power tools were missing, as well.

While on patrol at 9:45 p.m. another officer reports spotting a vehicle that matched the description included in the BOLO.

He reports he followed the vehicle along a few streets and that the driver continued to accelerate, running a stop sign. Eventually the driver pulled over on Second Avenue.

As a precaution the officer asked him to exit and conducted a pat down. He reports that he could feel and identify the shape of several pill bottles in his pockets. He found that the bottles bore the name of the man who had reported them stolen.

The officer learned through Lawrence Central Dispatch that McCafferty’s drivers license had been suspended. McCafferty was then placed under arrest.

At the time of his arrest, officers report he was wearing clothing that matched the description in the earlier BOLO. He was also in possession of Nike shoes believed to have been stolen from Shoe Show that day.

Officers report that needles and several pill bottles were lying in plain view inside the car. During an ensuing search they report finding power tools in the trunk.

Also found were two unopened cans of Coleman-type fuel, lithium batteries, spoons bearing residue, a mason jar bearing what was believed to be meth residue, and approximately one gram of marijuana.

McCafferty transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center, as was his passenger, twenty-three year old Cassandra Marie Shortridge of 2298 Grandview Drive.

McCafferty was booked on charges that include driving on a suspended license, theft over $500, promotion of the manufacture of meth, simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of Schedule II narcotics with intent to resale. He was incarcerated under a bond of $66,000.

Shortridge garnered charges of simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, promotion of the manufacture of meth, and possession of Schedule II narcotics with intent to resale. She was jailed under a bond of $62,000.

Both McCafferty and Shortridge will be required to answer the charges in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on August 1, 2013.
