Investigation Initiated Monday Into Possible Case Of Animal Cruelty

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were tasked Monday with initiating an investigation into a possible case of animal cruelty.

Deputies made their way to Knob Creek Road at 11:00 a.m. where they spoke with two residents. They reported that around the first of April they noticed that someone had put a horse in the barn next to their home. They said that they began feeding and watering the animal “because they found that no one was doing so.”

The residents indicated the horse had recently been moved into the pasture. They said a friend who is knowledgeable about horses told them the horse’s hooves were overgrown on the shoes and that the animal appeared to be in poor health.

In addition, the couple reported that a dead pony was lying in the back pasture.

The matter has been turned over for continued investigation by detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
