Officer And Citizen Spared Injury When Assaulted With Car

Public asked to assist in locating suspect

Local authorities are seeking public assistance in locating a man who allegedly assaulted both his ex-girlfriend and police officer with a car last week.

It was around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 28, reports show, when a Lawrenceburg Police Officer was dispatched to Oak Grove Apartments on Oak Street.

He met a woman who asked that he remain on-scene while she met with an ex-boyfriend, as she feared the encounter might turn violent. She indicated that she had asked repeatedly since April 11 that the man, Jeffery Paul Irwin, age 49, return her 2001 Ford Focus, taken without her permission. She said that Irwin had agreed to meet her at his apartment “to talk.”

The officer reports that when Irwin arrived he was belligerent and shouting obscenities while he walked to his apartment. He then reportedly exited, walked back to the car, and sat behind the wheel.

While the victim was standing between the driver door and another vehicle, the officer said Irwin looked at her, started the car, put it in reverse with the driver door open, then sped backwards quickly, striking her with the open door. The officer reports “her body was then pinched between the open door and the parked vehicle.”

The officer reports he ran to the opposite side, ordering Irwin to turn off the car and exit so that he could be arrested on assault charges. Instead, he reports “he cut the steering wheel hard to the right, sending the front of the vehicle to the left toward me.” He said that Irwin again turned the wheel and sped away, narrowly missing him a second time.

Reports indicate the victim was “terrified but uninjured.”

A “Be On the Lookout” (BOLO) alert was issued for Irwin and the stolen car, however Monday morning Lawrenceburg Police Chief Judy Moore said Irwin had not yet been apprehended.

Warrants have been issued, charging Irwin with aggravated domestic assault, aggravated assault of a police officer, evading arrest and theft of property.

Anyone who has information regarding the whereabouts of Irwin is asked to contact the department at 931-762-2276.
