Letter To Parents From LCHS Principal

Dear LCHS Parents,
We hope all is going well for you and your family.  The end of the school year is quickly approaching. This summer, LCHS will provide a FREE program designed to remediate students who did not pass Algebra IB.  Research has shown that if students have a solid foundation in Algebra IB, they are more likely to be successful in the more advanced math and science classes.  As you know, the new Tennessee Diploma Project, which took effect in 2009, increased the graduation requirements for math and science.  Students must now take and PASS four (4) math classes, with Algebra I as the beginning level, as well as three (3) science classes, which requires all students to take and pass either chemistry or physics.  LCHS is recommending that all students who fail Algebra IB in the current spring semester retake Algebra IB this summer.  If you choose not to send your child to summer school, he or she will have to pass four (4) math credits in three years in order to graduate under the new graduation requirements. For example, Algebra IA and IB would be taken as a sophomore, geometry and Algebra II as a junior, and a higher level math class as a senior. This course of action will be difficult enough, but for a student who has experienced difficulty already, it may be impossible.  It is our professional recommendation that you enroll your child in this free summer school program.

To best serve the needs of our students, Ms. Sheila Sherrod, LCHS math instructor, will begin teaching the course on June 6 and conclude on June 30.  All sessions will be held at LCHS beginning at 8:30 A.M. and concluding at 12:00 P.M.  To assist parents and students, we have made arrangements to provide lunch each day at no cost.  Ms. Sherrod will also be conducting tutoring sessions each day from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. to remediate students who have fallen behind.  This program is being offered to LCHS students only, and we expect parents and students to take advantage of this great opportunity. Due to limited seating, we encourage you to contact us by Wednesday, June 1, 2011, to reserve your child a spot in this program.

If you have any questions regarding summer school, do not hesitate to contact LCHS at 931-762-9412 between 8:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M., or email Mr. Brian Porter at bporter@lcss.us

Sincerely,

LCHS Administration
