The Tennessee Department of Transportation is looking to put a buggy path in Lawrence County for Amish.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has acknowledged the safety concerns of motorists and Amish buggies traveling on the same road.

Just within the past 12 months there have been 8 motor vehicle accidents involving Amish buggies, and out of those 8 one was a fatality, stated Lt. Scott Durham with the Lawrenceburg Police Department.

Possible solutions to decrease traffic accidents have been discussed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation in a statement they said, "We have come up with putting a 14-foot path on one side of the road behind the curb so that way the vehicles are separated from the buggies."

The buggy road would run about a mile and a half on the north side of town next to Highway 43 similar to a bike lane keeping the Amish buggies out of motorists traffic.

The proposal by TDOT hopes to decrease traffic accidents while making the roadways safe for Motorists, and Amish to travel.
