Local Charged With Car Theft In Killen

A Lawrenceburg man has been arrested on charges issued out of Killen, Alabama, accused of stealing a car and other crimes.

Officials with the Killen Police Department indicate Lawrenceburg resident Howard Latori Watkins, 24, has been arrested on charges that include first degree theft of property and third degree criminal mischief.

Authorities allege that Watkins test drove a car from T&G Auto Sales, situated on U.S. Highway 72 in Killen, on September 11, 2009. While driving the 2004 Chevrolet Impala, they allege Watkins had a duplicate key made, then returned the car to the lot and left.

That evening, authorities allege Watkins returned to the business and used the key to start the car. He then allegedly used the car to bust through a gate, then “took off,” stealing the vehicle. The car was found abandoned in Lewis County, near Hohenwald, in March. Authorities indicate the car had been stripped and burned.

Since the crime occurred, investigators with the Killen Police Department have continued to pursue leads in the case. Police Chief Mark Parker indicates that they were able to track down some of the car parts that had been sold to various individuals. The parts were taken into evidence and interviews conducted with the individuals who had them in their possession.

Investigators are expected to present evidence in the case to a Lauderdale County Grand Jury in coming days. At that time, Parker said, additional charges may be forthcoming.
