Vandals Use Explosion To Destroy Mailboxes

Law enforcement officials are investigating explosions reported in an area of Leoma early Saturday morning that resulted in the destruction of brick/block mailboxes.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were summoned to Prokesh Road shortly after 3:00 a.m. A resident reported that he had heard a loud explosion, came outside, and discovered that his neighbor’s mailbox had been completely destroyed.

Deputies report that pieces of block were, “All over the road, in the field, and in the victim’s yard.” The victim told deputies that he had heard the explosion, but had thought the sound was thunder. The mailbox was reportedly worth $4,500.

The reporting deputy noted, “I heard two explosions around this time and I did find another mailbox destroyed at 902 Prosser Road.” The deputy was unable to make contact with the resident at that time. Later, he learned that the mailbox had a value of approximately $1,000.

The cases currently remain under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the department at 931-762-3626.
