Speeder Issued Charges After Lying To Deputy

Multiple charges were issued against a Lawrence County resident last week after he allegedly lied to a police officer during a traffic stop.

The stop was made Thursday along U.S. Highway 43 South, just south of Old Florence Pulaski Road. The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputy involved reports he initiated the traffic stop after clocking the driver at 112 miles per hour in a 60 mile per hour speed zone.

When he made contact with the driver, who identified himself as Christopher Alan Faulkner, the deputy asked for the appropriate paperwork and reports Faulkner began “looking for” his driver license and proof of insurance.

According to reports Faulkner told the deputy he was driving fast because he was on his way to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital (ECM) in Florence. He stated that his son had been involved in a four-wheeler crash and was being airlifted to that hospital.

After obtaining Faulkner’s name, address and date of birth, the deputy advised him to slow down and allowed him to proceed to the hospital without issuing him any citations.

When he returned to the sheriffs department a short time later, the deputy reports he telephoned ECM and was told they had no such patient. During a call to Lauderdale County 911, the deputy was informed there had been no such accident. The deputy reports he waited approximately one hour, then checked with both locations again. Again he was told they had dealt with no such accident.

The deputy reports he made his way to the apartment Faulkner had listed as his address. There he made contact with Faulkner’s mother and girlfriend. They indicated they had no knowledge about any ATV wreck, but stated Faulkner had not returned at that time.

The women notified the deputy when Faulkner returned to the home. He reports he quickly made his way there and explained to Faulkner that he knew he had not told him the truth earlier.

As a result of the incident the deputy issued citations against Faulkner charging him with the crimes of speeding, reckless driving, driving on an expired license, violation of the seatbelt law, violation of the financial responsibility law, and giving false information. Faulkner is slated to answer the charges through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on May 10, 2010.
