Officers with the Saint Joseph Police Department were dispatched to 106 Hickory Avenue, Saint Joseph, TN in reference to an unruly subject making threats to cause harm to a nearby neighbor.

  The Loretto Police Department and Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department responded as backup.  While en route, dispatch received another call from 201 North Main Street, Saint Joseph, TN, in reference to a medical call.  The call was of an assault to a male which left him unconscious and unresponsive.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with the victim, Dexter H. Smith (63) who was being treated by the Lawrence County Ambulance Service for major facial and head injuries.  Smith was still unresponsive at this time.  An investigation of the scene and witness interviews lead officers to believe a neighbor, Robert Edward Jenkins (27), came to the residence and forced his way in by kicking open an entrance door.  While inside, Jenkins assaulted Smith by delivering repeated blows to his head and face.  The victim, Dexter H. Smith, was flown from the scene to Vanderbilt Hospital to be treated for his injuries.  The victim is listed in stable condition at this time with major injuries to his head and face.
During the investigation of the scene, an officer with the Loretto Police Department discovered Robert Jenkins walking on Iron City Road.  Jenkins was taken into custody without further incident and transported back to the scene.  Robert Jenkins admitted his involvement and had apparent injuries to his hands from the altercation.
Robert Jenkins was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center and charged with Aggravated Assault, Especially Aggravated Burglary, and Vandalism.  Robert Jenkins was placed under a $50,000 bond and scheduled for an appearance in General Sessions Court for arraignment.
