Amish Man Airlifted In Wake Of CrashScene of accident

A member of Lawrence County’s Amish community was airlifted to a Nashville hospital Thursday night after his buggy was struck by a motorist.

The crash reportedly occurred around 10:00 p.m. east of the Buffalo/Ethridge-Redhill Road intersection. According to reports filed through the Tennessee Highway Patrol by Trooper Jamie Benefield, Orla Mast was traveling eastbound on Ethridge-Redhill Road by horse and buggy at the time. Driver Christopher Bottoms, age 33, was traveling westbound in a curve when he reportedly crossed into the eastbound lane and sideswiped the buggy, causing it to flip. The horse, which was uninjured, became disconnected from his harness and fled. He was later recaptured. Mast was ejected from the buggy.

Mast was flown by helicopter to the Trauma Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where Friday afternoon his condition was upgraded to that of “stable.”

Bottoms, who fled from the scene of the accident, was located a short time later. He was placed under arrest on several charges including vehicular assault, leaving the scene of an accident with injury, driving on a revoked driver license and violation of the state insurance law. Bottoms is slated to answer the charges through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on June 19, 2009.

The case remains under investigation currently. If warranted, additional charges may be forthcoming.
