Superintendent Says Recycling Percentage Exceeds 60%

On Earth Day Superintendent Gary Wayne Hyde with the Lawrenceburg Sanitation Department told members of the city’s governing board that the amount of recycled refuse removed from the city’s garbage stream now exceeds 60%.

While last year the amount of recycled materials coming through the local landfill had reached 57%, “And I thought that was pretty good,” Hyde commented, citizens have begun recycling even more of their trash. The total for the past year, he said, is 61.8% -- up nearly 5% over the previous year.

In order for garbage to be recycled it must be cleaned, sorted and placed inside yellow garbage bags designated for recycle. It must also be kept out of the main waste stream. “Once it goes on the garbage trucks,” Hyde explained, “it becomes contaminated by the unsorted garbage.”

The yellow bags are made available to residents free of charge. Residents may pick up the bags at the landfill on Baler Drive, or at any of the designated recycle drop off locations, situated behind each school in the county.

The drop site structures were constructed through the use of grant funds. They allow residents to drop their recyclables off at the schools.

The schools then collect the recyclables, which are weighed by Hyde and his staff throughout the school year. The schools compete to collect the most recyclables, vying for $1,200.00 in annual cash prizes.

Hyde invites the public to attend an open house at the Sanitation Department, to be held from 8:00 a.m. until noon on Saturday, May 1, 2010. “Come in and see how we operate,” he invites.
