Children Charged In Abuse/Exploitation Of Mother

Two adult children of a Lawrenceburg woman face abuse charges after authorities discovered the victim in an unresponsive state inside the home, which they indicated was unfit for habitation, Monday morning.

Reports indicate that members of the Lawrence County Ambulance Service were summoned to the Flattwoods Road home around 11:30 a.m. Original dispatch notes indicate that the woman had a rash, was weak, “turning purple, unable to eat, and cannot keep anything on her stomach.”

As emergency medical technicians were administering aid to the victim, they requested that deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department be dispatched to the scene to initiate an investigation due to the atrocious living conditions.

When deputies arrived, they report that ambulance service personnel were tending to the needs of the sixty-two-year-old victim. She was lying on the floor and was “unresponsive to pain.” Reports indicate that the victim “was raw and possibly infected around the groin area.”

The reporting officer notes that as they approached the home, “At around twenty feet from the house I could smell a strong odor coming from the house.”

Inside, deputies report there was no running water and that the kitchen sink was stopped up. The toilet was overflowing, they report, and “the bathtub was full of what looked like human waste.”

Deputies report that, “A bed in the living room where (the victim) slept was worn and the springs were coming through the fabric. There was what appeared to be a urine stain covering the bed and floor.”

In addition, the reporting officer notes, “I did not find any edible food inside the residence.”

Deputies learned that the victim was living at the home with her daughter and son. The daughter, who was home at the time, told deputies that she was unable to work because she had to take care of her mother.” She indicated that the water had been off for approximately one year. She stated that she and her brother, who was at work at the time, shower at their sister’s home nearby.

The daughter, Ivorie Rose Lumpkins, age 24, was placed under arrest on charges of adult abuse/exploitation and transported to the Lawrence County Jail without incident. Likewise, warrants were issued against the son, Eric Anthony Lumpkins, age 27, charging him with the same crime.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Crockett Hospital and was later transferred to Maury Regional Hospital in Columbia.

Officials with the Adult Services division of the Department of Human Services were notified of the situation. At the present time investigation into the matter is continuing through that department, as well as through the Criminal Investigation Division of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.
