Burglar Swipes Copper From Units Stored Inside Home

Thieves continue to target copper in the area, in some instances going to the trouble to break into homes in order to steal the valuable commodity.

A resident of Leoma’s Revilo Road reported such a situation to local law enforcement officials on Friday. The victim, age 47, reported to Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies that someone had kicked in the front door to his home sometime between Thursday and Friday. Once inside, thieves reportedly stripped copper out of five air conditioning units that had been stored inside one bedroom. In addition, thieves stole his ax and stripped the copper out of the central unit hooked up outside the home.

While outside, the victim said the thieves pried open a sliding door to a truck parked behind the house, and stole a tire that was inside.

The victim estimates all damages and loss to total approximately $7,000.

Detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division are continuing to delve into the matter.
