Four Officers Assaulted During Domestic Violence Incident

Four Lawrenceburg Police officers were assaulted while intervening in a domestic violence situation in the early hours Wednesday.

According to reports officers were dispatched on a “domestic in progress” call to 323 May Street around 1:45 a.m. The female victim, age 32, told officers that she and her boyfriend, Joey Tyrone Simpson, 42, had been involved in an altercation.

She reported that Simpson had left the premises, but returned shortly saying that no one could make him leave. She said that Simpson had made repeated threats and twice burned her hair with a cigarette.

The pair was separated in an attempt to diffuse the situation. While officers were explaining to the victim the eviction process, they indicate Simpson returned to the room. They said he became aggressive toward the victim’s eighteen-year-old son, attempting to engage him in a fight.

Reports show that Simpson became more and more agitated and lunged toward the teen. When an officer grabbed Simpson and pulled him back, he reports Simpson jerked away and was subsequently “taken to the floor.”

While on the floor Simpson allegedly fought with the officer extensively, biting him on the arm and kicking another officer in an attempt to free himself. Reports show that when officers brought a handcuffed Simpson to a standing position, he head-butted a third officer just below the left eye.

While they were attempting to place Simpson inside a patrol car, reports show he kicked a fourth officer. Simpson was ultimately sprayed with an immobilizing spray so he could be placed in leg shackles.

Officers report that Simpson made repeated threats against their lives. During the ride to the Lawrence County Detention Center, they indicate he said he would, “kill them all when I get out of jail.”

Simpson was booked on charges of assault, domestic assault, vandalism, resisting arrest, and four counts of assault on a police officer. He was jailed under a bond of $73.000.

Simpson is slated to answer the charges through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on June 3, 2011.

The officer who was head-butted was taken to Crockett Hospital for medical attention.
