Charges Issued In Wake Of Huffing Incident

A woman accused in a shoplifting incident in Lawrenceburg Monday was booked through the Lawrence County Jail after allegedly huffing the stolen product.

Tonya Lynn Dowdy, 27, was booked through the Lawrence County Detention Center Monday on one count of disorderly conduct.

Officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department were summoned to Fred’s at 2016 North Locust Avenue shortly after noon. A clerk reported she had watched as Dowdy took two cans of compressed air from a shelf and placed them into her purse. She told officers that she confronted Dowdy when she attempted to leave without paying for the merchandise.

When she confronted Dowdy about items she had placed in her purse, the clerk reported she said nothing, turned and fled into the parking lot. The clerk indicated Dowdy got into a vehicle with another woman, and that they began huffing the contents of the cans. She said that the car left the parking lot, operated by a male driver.

Around thirty minutes later officers report conducting a traffic stop after spotting a vehicle and occupants that matched the descriptions given. The stop was made at the West Gaines Street/Buffalo Road intersection. Officers indicate that second female passenger was no longer in the vehicle.

When they confronted the driver about the incident, he told them that both women had gone into Fred’s while he went into a nearby store.

He said that he returned to the vehicle to find the women huffing the contents of the can “and acting all crazy.” He stated that he had not known that the cans were stolen, so he drove away.

When they confronted Dowdy about the shoplifting incident, officers report she denied stealing the compressed air canisters. She produced the cans and told officers they were stolen by the second woman.

Officers report that Dowdy became extremely agitated, throwing the cans, cursing, and struggling with officers when they attempted to place her into a squad car. Once she was arrested, officers report Dowdy was transported and booked without further incident.

Additional charges may be forthcoming, pending further investigation.
