Nearly $3K Stolen From Race Track

Officials with Mt. Nebo Race Track reported to authorities in recent days that nearly $3,000 was stolen by a man entrusted to pay the facility’s employees.

Tracy Gene Dean of Loretto filed a theft complaint with Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies, indicating that the actual theft took place on April 3. Because he had to leave, Dean reported he handed some $3,100 in cash to an employee from Peterville, Alabama, asking that he pay the rest of the employees for their work that night.

It was not until the next day, Dean reported, that he discovered that only the ambulance personnel had been paid. The remainder of the employees had not received their compensation. The funds missing were estimated to total $2,700.

Since that time, Dean reported, he has not been able to get in touch with the man to whom he had entrusted the money. He told deputies that the man will not return his calls.

Investigation into the crime is on-going presently through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
