Harlan Drive Home Burglarized Twice

  Several similar crimes under investigation

Law enforcement officials were summoned to the same home on two separate occasions during the weekend, after the owner found it had twice been targeted by burglars.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were first summoned to the 5 Harlan Drive home on Wednesday of last week. The owner, age 89, had found that the back door had been kicked in and the home burglarized.

In the wake of the initial investigation deputies nailed a board across the back door to prevent further intrusion On Thursday, however, the resident returned to find that the back door had been kicked in a second time.

Deputies noted the home had been ransacked. Drawers and doors had been left open. Thieves pilfered through a jewelry box, leaving empty boxes lying about.

While going through the jewelry box, reports show the culprit sat down at the kitchen table, opened and helped himself to the contents of a bag of candy lying there.

In addition to the break-ins on Harlan Drive, deputies were also called upon to investigate similar crimes within the past few days. One such call brought deputies to 72 Killen Branch Road, Loretto Sunday afternoon.

The resident had been staying with a relative. An individual who had been at the home to mow the lawn noticed the door was standing open and quickly advised the resident of the situation.

Deputies report the door had been kicked open. The only item the resident could identify as missing at that time was a set of car keys. Damages to the home were estimated at $400. The resident will continue to check the home to determine whether anything else is missing.

Around 4:30 Sunday afternoon residents of 111 Killen Road, Loretto reported they had returned from church to find their back door had been kicked in.

Two shotgun barrels, a diamond bracelet and a crystal bowl were reported missing. In addition, collectible currency including $2 bills, silver dollars and miscellaneous coins were taken. Total loss was estimated at $1,380.

Investigation into these and other crimes is underway at this time. Detectives are looking into some leads in the cases and ask that anyone who might have pertinent information contact the department at 762-3626.
