City Leaders Table Resolution To Lease Space For Trap Shooting Range

Lawrenceburg leaders have tabled a resolution that would have allowed the Lawrence County Board of Education to establish a trap shooting range on the same property as the city’s dog pound.

A resolution had appeared on the agenda for the Thursday morning meeting of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council to enter into a lease agreement with the school board for use of the property.

The school system is interested in leasing land for a shooting range in order to allow for the development of trap shooting teams at local high schools.

Before the resolution was brought up for consideration, resident and former Lawrenceburg Commissioner Greg Johnston addressed the board on the issue. Johnston pointed out that his family’s horse farm borders the dog pound property. He expressed concern that establishing the range at that particular location could endanger the animals.

Johnston pointed out that he completely supports the idea of establishing such a range for use by local youngsters, but requested that the council consider doing so at another location.

One location suggested was property adjacent to the city’s demolition landfill. Johnston pointed out that this large section of land is more isolated and would pose less of a danger to stock, etc.

Council members opted to table the resolution pending further study of the matter.
