Resident Reports Dogs Slaughtered Chickens

Law enforcement officials have been tasked with investigating a Summertown resident’s complaint that a neighbor’s dogs had slaughtered a number of his chickens in past days.

On Friday the resident reported to Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies that he had watched as a neighbor’s Pit bulldog and Boxer attacked and killed fifteen of his laying hens. This, he pointed out, was not the first such attack.

The resident reported that he made his way to the neighbor’s home to discuss the matter. He reports that the neighbor indicated he had been aware that the dogs were killing his chickens “’cause they would find them in their yard.”

When he asked the neighbor to keep his dogs contained so that they would not kill any more of his chickens, the victim said the neighbor refused to do so. He told deputies it was at this point that he informed his neighbor he would “do what he had to do to protect his property.”

He reports that the neighbor warned him if he harmed his dogs he would call the Humane Society and Sheriff’s Department to report the matter.

The resident obtained a copy of the report and was advised by deputies about the process for obtaining a criminal summons against his neighbor.

Total loss as a result of the incident was estimated at $225.00.
