Resident Who Punched Officer May Also Face Animal Neglect Charge

A Leoma man who was booked through the local jail after punching an officer last week may face additional charges for walking around with an injured dog and failing to obtain medical assistance.

Timothy Travis Jenkins, a forty-four-year-old resident of 3 Sanders Street, Leoma, was arrested early Friday in the area of White Road.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department had been summoned to the area by concerned citizens who reported Jenkins appeared to be intoxicated.

Upon his arrival, the reporting deputy indicates Jenkins was sitting on the ground. When he arose, the deputy noticed a small white dog in his lap was bleeding. When he asked Jenkins what was wrong with the dog, he says Jenkins told him the dog was dead.

Deputies found that the dog had actually sustained life-threatening injures when attacked by another dog. Officials estimated the attack had occurred around twelve hours before.

Deputies report Jenkins became increasingly agitated, and that they offered to take the dog to be looked at by a veterinarian. He reportedly became increasingly agitated, refusing to get into the back of a squad car.

Jenkins was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center. While he was being booked on charges of public intoxication, reports show he began yelling and cursing, then punched a deputy in the arm.

Jenkins was booked under two counts of assault and one count of resisting arrest. He will answer the charges through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on May 5, 2011.

The dog was transported to receive care from a local veterinarian. It had reportedly sustained a lacerated trachea when attacked. After receiving medical assistance, the dog died later that day. As a result, officials report Jenkins may also face charges of animal neglect and animal cruelty.
