Authorities Investigate Moneygram Fraud

Law enforcement officials are conducting an investigation regarding fraudulent moneygrams that were reportedly passed at a Lawrenceburg bank during March.

Lawrenceburg Police Officers were summoned to the North Locust Branch of First Farmers and Merchants Bank on Wednesday. Bank officials reported that a customer who resides in Summertown had cashed two “Safeway Moneygrams,” each for the amount of $950.00, at the location on March 11. Bank officials were soon notified that the moneygrams were fraudulent.

The indicate that both were addressed to the bank customer from “Paul Carter” and both bore an address in Anaheim, California.

One bank employee told officers that she had made numerous attempts to contact the customer by telephone “to assist her in settling the matter,” to no avail. In addition, she reported she had mailed a letter to the patron on March 20. The letter explained the situation and asked that she contact the bank as quickly as possible.

The matter remains under investigation through the bank, as well as the police department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
