Driver Issued Drug Charges After Trying To Eat The Evidence

A local man was arrested on several drug charges in the early hours Thursday after he attempted to “eat the evidence” during a traffic stop.

Reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department show that an officer initiated the traffic stop around 12:20 a.m. after a driver was determined to be speeding along Watson Drive.

The officer reports he followed the driver onto West Gaines Street, then onto Buffalo Road, where the stop occurred. He reports that when he made contact with the driver, Austin Thomas Remke, 22, of 409 Weakley Creek Road, he detected an odor of green marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

The officer reports he requested permission to conduct a search of the car, but that Remke refused. While he was calling for a K-9 officer to be dispatched to the location, a second officer who had arrived on the scene noticed that Remke appeared to be attempting to eat a bag he believed contained drugs.

Reports show that Remke was pulled from the vehicle and ordered repeatedly to spit out the bag. Officers report he did eventually comply. During a search subsequent to arrest officers report finding a second plastic bag concealed in Remke’s left sock. Officers indicate the bag contained several different types of pills.

As a result of the incident Remke was arrested on charges of possession of Schedule II narcotics, two counts of possession of Schedule III narcotics, two counts of possession of Schedule IV narcotics, and tampering with evidence. He was also issued citations charging him with the traffic violations of speeding and failure to carry and exhibit a driver license on demand.

Remke is set to answer the charges in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on May 6, 2011.
