Man Driving Lawnmower Charged With DUI

A man found to be illegally operating a lawnmower along a city street Sunday has been arrested on charges of DUI.

According to reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department, officers were dispatched to investigate the matter shortly before 11:00 p.m. Sunday. They found the man driving a lawnmower along Business Avenue, without the benefit of any lights. Although officers engaged blue lights and sirens, they report the driver refused to yield.

A police officer was forced to pull his patrol car in front of the man to force him to the side of the roadway.

Officers report that the driver smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage, and that he failed to perform satisfactorily on field sobriety tests. When they asked why he failed to yield, the driver allegedly stated he had not heard the sirens or seen the lights.

As a result the driver, Steven Paul Armstrong, 47, of Weakley Creek Road, was placed under arrest on charges of third offense DUI, failure to yield, and disorderly conduct. While he was being transported to the Lawrence County Jail Armstrong allegedly made threats against his arresting officers.

The lawnmower was subsequently towed to the city’s impound lot.
