Arrestee Now Charged With Rape

A Lawrenceburg man jailed last week on numerous charges stemming from the attack of his girlfriend inside their H.H. Lane home is facing additional charges, including that of rape.

The victim, age 26, had told authorities she spent the night in the woods after fleeing from her home the evening of March 31. She indicated that her boyfriend, forty-nine-year-old Paul Rickey Staggs, had beaten her while their four-year-old son slept nearby.

Once she had fled she said she prowled about in the dark “until she passed out.” After she awoke and found her bearings, she said she made her way to a relative’s home on Waterloo Road. Shortly afterwards Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies were summoned to the home.

They later placed Staggs under arrest on charges of domestic assault, vandalism, failure to yield, driving on a revoked license, evading arrest, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, and two outstanding warrants for vandalism.

During the ensuing investigation the victim reported to detectives that Staggs had brutalized her on other occasions. She indicated that he had raped her during an incident that occurred on March 17.

She told detectives that Staggs had been drunk when she got home from work and that he began to beat her. She stated that he forced her to have sex with him and that during the assault he raped and sodomized her with a water bottle.

As a result of the investigation detectives obtained state warrants charging Staggs with a second count of domestic assault and one count of aggravated rape.
