Woman Lost In Woods Overnight After Fleeing From Assault

A Lawrenceburg woman sought help from law enforcement officials last week, saying that she spent the night in the woods after fleeing from an assault inside her home.

The victim, age 26, told Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies that she had become involved in an altercation with her boyfriend inside their 1 H.H. Lane home on Wednesday evening, March 31.

She reported that while their four-year-old son was present inside the home, he struck her repeatedly about the face and back of the head, whipped her with a belt, threw full cans of Pepsi at her, and poured beer on her.

When she refused to go into the bedroom, she said he began to beat her about the body while making threats to kill her.

Fearing for her life, the victim said she ran out the back door and into some nearby woods. She told deputies she wandered about in the dark until she “passed out.” When she awakened some time later, she realized she was cold and began listening for traffic sounds to identify the direction of the roadway.

When she got her bearings, she was able to make her way to her aunt’s home on Waterloo Road around 4:30 a.m. Thursday. She later called for assistance in getting her son out of the home.

While they were speaking with the victim, deputies report the suspect drove past with the small child inside his truck. A deputy followed, attempting to stop the man with emergency lights and sirens. The suspect, however, refused to stop.

He led the deputy onto Beeler Cut Off, then onto a field road. He then drove back to Beeler Cut Off and onto Waterloo Road. He finally stopped at a home situated at 343 Waterloo Road.

When the suspect exited his vehicle, the deputy reports he began cursing everyone there. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.

There Ricky Paul Staggs, 49, was booked on charges that include domestic assault, vandalism, failure to yield, driving on a revoked license, evading arrest, reckless driving and reckless endangerment.

Deputies also found two outstanding vandalism warrants against Staggs that had been issued when he allegedly broke windows out of the home he shares with the victim, as well as all his son’s toys.
