Woman Attacked In Front Of Her Six Children

Lawrenceburg Police Officers were summoned to intervene late Wednesday after a Crowson Road resident’s ex-husband allegedly attacked her in front of their six children.

Reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department show that the 911 call was placed from a neighbor’s home by one of the couples’ minor children. Reports indicate the child reported that “Daddy was drinking and that he was beating up on their mother.”

When they arrived at the scene, officers spoke with the thirty-one-year-old victim. She stated that she and her ex-husband had become involved in an argument regarding the children’s absences from school. During the argument, she said, he grabbed an 8” to 10” glass candlestick and struck her repeatedly in the head. In addition, she told officers that he struck her numerous times about the head with his fists/hands. The entire assault, she said, took place in front of all six children.

Reports indicate that while two of the children were of legal age, the four remaining minors were ages 15, 11, 10 and 7.

Members of the Lawrence County Ambulance Service provided initial medical attention, then transported the victim to Crockett Hospital by ambulance. Officers noted that the woman had sustained several injuries, including a black eye and a knot to the right side of her head.

As a result of the investigation, the ex-husband, Garvis Glenn Smotherman, 44, of Waynesboro, was placed under arrest on charges of aggravated domestic assault. Smotherman is slated to answer the charge through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on May 2, 2008.
