Elder Neglect Case Under Investigation

A Lawrenceburg woman was issued a warning to institute more effective care techniques when her elderly charge was found begging near a busy highway Monday.

A Lawrenceburg Police Officer on routine patrol reported spotting the victim, age 63, in the parking lot of Lawrenceburg Plaza around 3:00 p.m. Monday, adjacent to U.S. Highway 43 (North Locust Avenue).

The officer reports that the victim, who is mentally challenged and unable to care for himself, was begging for money and cigarettes. According to the officer, the man’s clothing was extremely soiled, his nails were uncut, and he smelled strongly of urine.

Officers contacted the man’s caretaker and advised her that since she drew a check on his behalf, she was responsible for his care and well being.

The officer noted that “this is not the first time he has been seen in town in this condition.” The man’s condition was documented with photographs and he was returned to the custody of his caretaker.
