TBI RELEASES 2007 “CRIME ON CAMPUS” REPORT

Nashville, TN- The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Statistics Unit today released its annual “Crime on Campus” report which shows a 12.6% decrease in the number of crimes on college campuses reported in 2007 compared with 2006. This is the third year in a row crime on campuses has dropped statistically.

There were a total of 7,371 offenses reported in 2007, compared with 8,425 in 2006. Colleges and universities that reported the largest number of offenses during 2007 were contacted about the reasons for the decrease. The responses indicated a proactive response to crime prevention.

Reported Statistics at a Glance

  1. • Larceny/Theft offenses continue to be the largest percentage of crimes reported with 34.4% in 2007. This category has maintained a consistent trend since 2004.
  1. • Drug/Narcotic offenses decreased 10.8% with Drug/Narcotic violations decreasing 8.9% and Drug Equipment violations decreasing 14%.
  1. • The reported number of rapes increased from 21 in 2006 to 25 in 2007.
  1. • Robberies decreased by 42.2% with 26 offenses reported in 2007 compared with 45 robberies reported in 2006.
  1. • During 2007, one Murder/Nonnegligent Manslaughter and one Negligent Manslaughter were reported.
  1. • Reported crimes occurring off campus continued to increase. This change may be attributed to law enforcement identifying college students who are victims of crime off campus.
