Summertown High School Principal Recently Named Tennessee Association Of Student Councils Administrator Of The Year

Brent Long, principal of Summertown High School, was recently named Tennessee Association of Student Councils Administrator of the Year.

This award recognizes administrators who support the work of their school’s student council. To be eligible for this award, administrators must be nominated by the school advisor and two student council members.

Mr. Long’s influence on student council is quite evident. Several members of the Summertown High Student Council shared their comments about what made Mr. Long such a viable candidate for this award. Taylor Holman, President of the Student Body wrote: “Mr. Long has been supportive of everything we have attempted.

He united our school and joined the students when it came to raising money for Make a Wish and sponsoring the Second Harvest Food Give Away. Mr. Long has more passion for Summertown High than anyone I know. He works with every club, especially Student Council with patience and dedication.”

Jason Hill, junior and President Elect of the Student Council stated: “Mr. Long is a great principal; he has the best interest of our students at heart. He supports the student council in every thing we do. Mr. Long is not only a great administrator, but also a great leader and example. He will never know what he means to every one at SHS.”

Junior Blake Clark commented: “Mr. Long does an incredible job as an administrator.  His door is always open to us for new ideas and he takes time out of his busy schedule to support our activities and travel with us to conventions.”

Jessica Smith, SHS junior, said “Mr. Long, principal of Summertown High School, truly shows what it means to be a leader. He does this not because of his job but because that is who he is.

Even before he became principal, he was a greatly influential leader. He means a great deal to our council and our school. He helps us get projects done and he constantly supports us in all of our efforts.

Mr. Long is the foundation of our school and our student council. Without him as a strong foundation, our council could not be as effective as it is. Mr. Long truly embodies the principle of “leading by example.”

Freshman Lindsey Staggs wrote: “If Mr. Long isn’t doing something for our school, he is doing something for our community. He has great impact on our student council. He helps us explore new project ideas and even takes a risk when we attempt a new project like Make a Wish or the Second Harvest Food Bank Give-Away.”

Student Council Advisor, Diane Webb explained: “One of Mr. Long’s goals is for SHS to become a vehicle for community service. In October we hosted the largest Second Harvest Food Give-Away in Lawrence County.

On the day of the event he was one of the first persons there and helped direct traffic and load groceries for the 400+ families who received food that day. At the end of the day, he, like the rest of us, was moved to tears.”

For the first time, our school granted a wish through the Make a Wish program. Throughout the process, Mr. Long was instrumental in planning and participating in the numerous fund raisers necessary to accomplish this feat.

Most importantly, Mr. Long is a man of character who loves our school and our students. Mr. Long is a remarkable asset to student council and our entire council congratulates him on this award.
