ATV Crash Results In Critical Injury
An ATV crash in the Wayland Springs area Friday resulted in critical injuries for an Iron City man.
Emergency personnel responded to 5719 Wayland Springs Road around 8:10 p.m. A witness reported that he and the victim, forty-three-year-old Shannon K. Atwell, had been riding ATVs when Atwell lost control and struck a large tree stump.
According to the witness, Atwell was thrown from the ATV into another tree stump, striking his head. He was also pinned beneath the ATV for approximately twenty minutes before a 911 call was placed. Reports indicate that Atwell was wearing a safety helmet at the time of the crash.
By the time emergency personnel arrived, family members had disentangled Atwell from the four wheeler and carried him into his residence. According to reports, Atwell’s condition at that time was described as “critical.”
Atwell received preliminary medical treatment at the scene and was then flown via Air Evac from the scene to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
