Traffic Stop Yields Meth Charges

Meth charges were issued against a driver during the weekend after he handed over ephedrine to policemen, claiming that it was flour.

A deputy with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department reports making the traffic stop on North Brace Road after 8:00 p.m. Saturday. He reports that he had knowledge at the time that the license of the driver was suspended.

When he asked the two men inside the vehicle to empty their pockets, the deputy reports driver Jonathan Edward Gray, 23, of 48 Lentz Road, Summertown, pulled a plastic bag containing a white powder substance from his pocket and handed it over. Gray reportedly told the deputy that the bag contained flour that he was “taking to a friend’s house to make cookies.”

Gray was taken into custody and transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center. There, reports show the substance was tested. Test results showed that the substance was ephedrine; the key ingredient in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Gray was booked on charges of promotion of meth and initiation of a meth process. A court date of April 11, 2011 has been scheduled.
