Council Appoints New Streets Department Superintendent

Members of the governing board of the City of Lawrenceburg voted unanimously during a meeting Thursday to approve a new Superintendent for the city’s Streets Department.

City Administrator William McLain made the recommendation during a meeting of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Commissioners. He indicated that applications for the post, left vacant by the recent death of former Superintendent Mike Weathers, had already been accepted. Applicants were then interviewed and tested. Based upon data collected by he and others, he recommended that the council appoint long-time Street Department employee Jerry Smith to fill the position.

McLain pointed out that Smith has been employed through the department for twenty-plus years, working his way up from general laborer to his recent rank as Lead Person, which he obtained in 2004. During a roll call vote, members of the board voted unanimously to affirm the nomination.

Relatives of former Superintendent Mike Weathers attended the meeting. Brother Jonathan addressed the council, extending praise and appreciation to members of the local emergency response teams for the care and respect shown at Weather’s passing, as well as to city staff who have since offered assistance in paperwork, etc., associated with his death. Weathers requested that Police Chief Judy Moore place letters of commendation into the records of police officers who worked Weather’s case.
