Mom Arrested On Drug Charges With Child Present

A thirty-five year old West Point Road resident was arrested last week in the wake of allegations that she had been selling drugs with her small child present.

Shana Leigh Barnes was incarcerated at the Lawrence County Detention Center on Thursday.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department report that an arrestee had confessed to purchasing meth from Barnes while her son was present.

They indicate that they attempted to contact Barnes at her home and were unable to do so, but met her vehicle shortly afterwards and conducted a traffic stop. Her three year old son was with her at the time.

Deputies report that Barnes denied having sold drugs at her home while her children were present. She allowed a search of her vehicle during which deputies report finding several items of contraband, including baggies containing marijuana, an unidentified round orange pill, and various items considered to be drug paraphernalia. Deputies also seized a small amount of a white substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine or a meth derivative.

Barnes denied any knowledge of the items and said that a number of individuals had been inside her vehicle recently. Deputies report that while speaking with Barnes she handed them some jewelry she said had been given to her by a man she knew only as “Seth.” She told deputies that he had also been inside her vehicle a couple of times, “but would not explain any further as to why he gave it to her or for what.”

Barnes was jailed on various charges for possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
