Suspected Arson Fire Claims West Point Home

A fire believed to have been intentionally ignited claimed a home in the West Point area Monday afternoon.

Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department show that deputies were dispatched to a structure fire at 339 Hardin Loop around 3:20 p.m.

Ronald Jackson reported the property belongs to Texas resident Danny Grey, but was unable to provide any additional information about him. He indicated he had extinguished a grass fire on the property around 2:00 p.m. He also pointed out that “someone had attempted to burn it twice before.”

Deputies report that when they arrived on the scene the home was already fully engulfed in flames. The structure was deemed a complete loss. Members of the Iron City, Gandy and West Point Fire Departments worked to extinguish the blaze.

Reports show that there was no power to the home at the time the fire ignited. Also, shoe prints were found at an area on the southwest corner of the building, where no emergency personnel had walked. Deputies tentatively identified the prints as from a size 13 Nike Shock.

Investigation into the fire is currently continuing by detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division. Anyone who has information that might further the investigation is encouraged to contact the department at 762-3626.
