Daughter Wields Broom Handle To Stop Assault On Mom

Authorities indicate that a young girl intervened in a domestic altercation Monday afternoon in order to stop an assault against her mother.

The mother, a thirty-one-year-old resident of 308 Gibson Street, Iron City came to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department to report the incident and seek an order for protection.

She reported that she and her husband, James Lanny Kelley, age 50, had become involved in an argument while sitting on the back porch of their home. She said that he demanded she give him her wedding ring and stated he wanted a divorce.

The victim said in her anger she kicked the stool on which she was sitting off the back porch, then went inside to gather her belongings and retrieve her ten-year-old daughter, so that they could leave. She said that Kelley picked up the stool and threw it against the house, then kicked the door open, came inside and confronted her again.

The victim reported that Kelley began to choke her, and that he continued to choke her until her daughter began to beat him over the back with a broom handle. She said that he stopped and went back outside while she and her daughter left the premises.

In the wake of their investigation deputies did obtain a criminal warrant, charging Kelley with one count of domestic assault.
