Several Items To Be Considered By County Commission On Tuesday

Members of the Lawrence County Board of Commissioners will meet in regular session Tuesday to consider passage of several items of business.

The commission will consider approving amendments to both the Lawrence County and Lawrence County Board of Education 2012-2013 budgets. They will also be asked to elect Commissioner Denny Gillespie to serve a two-year term as a member of the Agricultural Extension Committee.

Commissioners will consider amending a resolution that involves the donation of three acres of land at the old David Crockett Elementary School property, to the City of Lawrenceburg for the purpose of building a fire hall.

One resolution urges local representatives of the Tennessee General Assembly and State Senate to vote against bills relating to school vouchers.

The resolution indicates that the proposed school voucher program would divert critical funding from public schools, instead channeling funds into private schools, “…that may deny admission to students for arbitrary and unstated reasons.”

A resolution up for consideration would urge members of the Tennessee General Assembly and State Senate to vote against a bill involving only local utility districts. According to the resolution, the bills, “…apply only to Lawrence County and water utility districts having less than 1,600 customers, which bills required the election of a five member board of Utility District Commissioners to be elected by the customers…”

The resolution notes that passage of the bills would allow all individuals residing within a utility district to vote in election of commissioners; even those who live within a district but who are not water customers.

In addition to these items, commissioners will consider resolutions that would allow all elected county officials to participate in the County Health Insurance Program under the same terms and conditions as regular county employees, and allow all elected county officials to participate in the county’s Cafeteria Type Insurance Plans.

Also, commissioners area asked to rescind a resolution approved in July 1993, regarding extra compensation being provided to members of the commission for missing regular work for county business.

The commission meeting, which is open to the public, is scheduled to get underway at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 inside the commission meeting room at the Lawrence County Courthouse.
