Authorities investigate passing of counterfeit money
Lawrenceburg Now
Two local law enforcement agencies were called upon to initiate separate investigations last week regarding the passing of counterfeit money.
On Friday, officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department were called to Community Bank of Lawrence County on North Locust Avenue where a teller reported the discovery of a counterfeit $100 bill. She told officers that a customer had returned the fake bill after she had inadvertently given it to him when he cashed a check.
In a separate incident, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Holden’s Muffler Shop in Iron City on Wednesday. Employees reported that two counterfeit $20 bills had been passed there.
An employee reported that he had been working on a car when he was approached by a man who wished to purchase a used Flow Master muffler. He said he quoted a price of $40 and that the man handed him two $20 bills.
He said that he “placed them in his pocket without paying attention to the condition of the bills.” Later he checked them with a counterfeit testing pen and discovered that they were fake. Deputies were given the identity of the man, who is a resident of Cloverdale, AL.
Investigation into both incidents is on-going at the current time.
