Deputy Sustains Dog Bite While Investigating Domestic Altercation

A Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputy sustained a dog bite while intervening in a domestic altercation that occurred in the Leoma area late Saturday.

Reports filed through the department show that deputies were dispatched to a home on Copperas Branch Road shortly before midnight on an on-going domestic dispute call involving a firearm. The victim reported she and her boyfriend had become involved in an argument earlier in the evening that had escalated into violence.

She said that the boyfriend, Ronnie Demarcus Mitchell, 27, had thrown her onto the ground, began choking her, then stuck a gun into her mouth during the initial altercation. She said that he left for a time before returning to the home.

During a second argument, the victim reported Mitchell became angered because she had poured out his liquor. She said that he pushed her into the dresser causing her to fall onto the floor, then began to choke her once again. When he began making verbal threats to kill her, the victim said she struck him in the head with her telephone, then placed a 911 call for help.

The victim said Mitchell snatched the telephone from her and ended the call. When a dispatcher called back he reportedly stated that the “battery was messed up” and reported that it was she that had struck him.

Mitchell was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where he was booked under charges of aggravated domestic assault. He is scheduled to answer the charge through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on March 21, 2011.

While working the case, reports show that a Dachshund belonging to the victim’s mother bit Deputy Tony Beard in the calf. Reports show that the bite left an approximate two inch bruise and scratches to the skin. It was quickly determined that the dog was current on vaccinations.
