Local Woman Falls Victim To Scam

A local woman reported to law enforcement officers Monday that she had fallen victim to an apparent scam.

The victim, age 43, reported that she had received a telephone call on March 7 from “CPA Prize Winning.” The caller informed her that she was the winner of a $5,000,000 prize. He said that she had twelve hours in which to claim her prize. To do so, he said she needed to wire them $500 to cover taxes on her winnings.

The complainant told a deputy with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that she had wired the amount to a location in Jamacia. She said that she had arranged to meet the man at her bank. When he failed to show up, she said she drove to the sheriff’s department to report the incident.
